Life

Sylvain Cambreling studied music at the Conservatory of Amiens, the Conservatoire de Paris and the École Normale de Musique de Paris . In 1972 he graduated as an orchestra conductor and won the Besançon International Conducting Competition in 1974 .

From 1975 to 1981 Cambreling was deputy director of the Lyon Opera . In 1981 he was appointed General Music Director of the La Monnaie Opera in Brussels . Together with the artistic director Gerard Mortier , he led the house to the top of the European opera houses. He worked with directors such as Luc Bondy , Patrice Chéreau , Karl-Ernst Herrmann , Peter Mussbach and Herbert Wernicke . From 1992 to 1997 Cambreling was artistic director and general music director of the Frankfurt Opera . Because of his friendship with Gerard Mortier, who had been director of the Salzburg Festival since 1991 , the three theaters worked together intensively and fruitfully. During Cambreling's time in Frankfurt there were numerous important productions by directors such as Peter Mussbach ( Wozzeck , Don Giovanni , Le nozze di Figaro , The Merry Widow ), Herbert Wernicke ( The Ring of the Nibelung ) and Christoph Marthaler ( Pelléas et Mélisande , Luisa Miller , Fidelio ) . Under Cambreling's leadership, who was elected conductor of the year by the magazine opernwelt himself in 1993/94 , the Frankfurt Opera was awarded the title Opera House of the Year for the first time in 1995 . Despite the great success with the public, however, he left Frankfurt in 1997 before his contract expired after public disputes had broken out over savings in the opera's budget.

From 1999 to 2011, Cambreling was Michael Gielen's successor as chief conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg . Cambreling is also a guest conductor of numerous opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera , La Scala in Milan , the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera , as well as guest conductor of various internationally recognized symphony orchestras. Cambreling also appeared as a conductor at the festivals in Glyndebourne , Salzburg and Bregenz .

Sylvain Cambreling was General Music Director of the Stuttgart Opera from 2012 to 2018 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Klangforum Wien from 1997 to 2018 . Since 2010 he has been Principal Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra , Tokyo.
