Peter Mussbach (born July 3, 1949 in Schwabach , Middle Franconia ) is a German director .

Life

Peter Mussbach studied singing , piano and conducting at the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg and Munich as well as German , theater studies , art history , philosophy , law , sociology (diploma thesis "On the making of opera in Italy") and medicine (1984 doctorate "On the current state of Creutzfeld-Jakob disease «).

He practiced as a doctor in Munich at the University Hospital Großhadern of the LMU Internal Medicine. And then also psychiatry and neurology in the University Clinic for Psychiatry at LMU . In this context, research work on Ey Tracking Dysfunction (ETD) and schizophrenia .

1973 began his career as an opera and theater director with Cornelius' »The Barber of Baghdad« in Augsburg; he staged "Götterdämmerung" in Frankfurt , a Schönberg cycle in Hamburg , "Parsifal", "From a House of the Dead", "Stephen Climax" and "Les Troyens" in Brussels . In 1993 he directed Mozart's "Lucio Silla" at the Salzburg Festival , followed by "The Rake's Progress", "Lulu" (co-production Salzburg Festival and German State Opera Berlin ), "Doktor Faust" (co-production Salzburg Festival and Metropolitan Opera New York ) and Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk". He also created the sets for “Wozzeck”, “Lulu”, “Fidelio”, “Figaro”, “Don Giovanni” and various world premieres such as Manfred Trojahn's “Enrico”, “Was Ihr Wollt” and Wolfgang Rihm's “ The Conquest of Mexico ” . At the Staatstheater Stuttgart he created the production and equipment for »Séraphin«, » King Roger « and, most recently, Helmut Lachenmann's »Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern« in his own stage design. He worked as a film director in 1993 with "Cain is Cain" based on Edgar Varèses "Amériques" and in 1995 with television adaptations of "Wozzeck" and "Séraphin".

From 1997 to 2001 Peter Mussbach was full professor for directing and acting at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and in 2001/2002 visiting professor for musical theater directing in Hamburg.

He wrote the libretto for Peter Ruzicka's opera "Celan" ( Semperoper Dresden 2001) . Peter Mussbach staged Strauss' »Arabella« at the Théâtre du Châtelet in a co-production with the Royal Opera House .
