The Mozarteum International Summer Academy in Salzburg dates back to the summer of 1916 and has had its current name since 1947. Today over 80 master classes take place every year. These are led by teachers from the Mozarteum University and selected, internationally renowned artists and attended by 800–1000 young musicians from all over the world.

history

1916–1928 (with interruptions) the singer Lilli Lehmann used the summer months for private master classes in the premises of the Mozarteum Salzburg; the focus of the courses was the Mozart - interpretation . In 1925 the violinist Willy Schweyda, who previously worked in Salzburg and now in Prague, joined the group. In the summer of 1929, after Lilli Lehmann's death, the conductor Julian Friedman led an orchestral academy especially for American students, flanked by courses in music-dramatic performance, piano and composition. 1930–1937 the facility was called “Musical Summer Courses”, and from 1937–1940 “Mozarteum Summer Academy for Music, Theater and Dance”. 1940–1944 a “Summer Academy for Foreigners in the Mozarteum” took place with “lower popularity due to the war and alliance politics”. In 1947 the conductor Bernhard Paumgartner reorganized the offer, now under the name "International Summer Academy Mozarteum", and took over the management together with Eberhard Preussner . Preußner followed in 1960 as sole director, 1965 Heinz Scholz, 1966 Robert Wagner , 1972 Paul Schilhawsky, 1983 Rolf Liebermann , 1988 Peter Lang , 1991 Paul Roczek, 2003 Alexander Müllenbach, 2014 Reinhart von Gutzeit , 2015 Siegfried Mauser together with Wolfgang Holzmair , 2017 Holzmair as sole director and in 2019 Hannfried Lucke .
