Harvey Shapiro (born June 22, 1911 in New York City , † October 25, 2007 ) was an American cellist, chamber musician and music teacher.

Shapiro was a student of Willem Willeke at the Institute of Musical Art for ten years . For a short time he also took lessons from Diran Alexanian . In 1937 he received the Naumberg Award and the Morris Loeb Prize , and Arturo Toscanini brought him to the NBC Symphony Orchestra . With Joseph Gingold and the pianist Earl Wild , he formed the NBC Trio there , and he also played in the Primrose String Quartet (with William Primrose , Joseph Gingold and Oscar Shumsky). Until it broke up in 1942, the Primrose Quartet performed regularly live on NBC radio and recorded recordings for RCA Victor .

When the NBC Symphony Orchestra's first cellist, Frank Miller , joined the US Army in the 1950s, Shapiro took over the position he held under Toscanini's direction for three years, and he was in the 1960s, after Toscanini's death First cellist of the Symphony of the Air , which was founded by members of the disbanded NBC Symphony Orchestra. He was considered one of the world's best cello teachers; His more than one thousand students included Jennifer Kloetzel , Astrid Schween , Amanda Forsyth , Philipp von Steinaecker , Ilya Finkelshteyn , Derek Menchan , Daniel Gaisford , Allison Eldredge , Kō Iwasaki , Clancy Newman , Adam Fisher , Su-a Lee , Jeffrey Lastrapes , Alan Stepansky , John Reed , Fabio Presgrave , David Sella , Jun Jensen , Orfeo Mandozzi , Inbal Segev , Mattia Zappa , Mark Eeles , Jerry Grossman , Suzanne Mueller , James Kreger , Kaamel Salah-Eldin , Lawrence Zoernig , Erkki Lahesmaa , Paula Kiffner and Joshua Gordon . In 1991 the American String Teachers Association named him Teacher of the Year .

Shapiro remained active as a musician and teacher well into old age. At the age of 86 he successfully gave a concert in Tokyo, and after a performance at the Prinzregententheater in Munich in 1998, music critics spoke of a return to the golden days of Casals and Feuermann . Until 2006 he went on concert tours and gave master classes in Salzburg, Vienna and Florence, among others.
