Philipp von Steinaecker

Philipp von Steinaecker (* 1972 in Hamburg ) is a German cellist and conductor .

Live and act

Von Steinaecker grew up in Hamburg and initially played as a cellist in the Federal Youth Orchestra and in the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra . He studied cello in Vienna , at the Juilliard School in New York with Harvey Shapiro and at the Paris Conservatory with Christophe Coin . He completed his conducting studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Mark Stringer . During his studies in Vienna he performed with the Vienna Philharmonic and at the Vienna State Opera .

Von Steinaecker initially worked as principal cellist in the Orchester Révolutionaire et Romantique under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner and was a founding member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra . For a year he held the position of Melgaard Young Conductor with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and assisted Gardiner in two opera productions at the Opéra-Comique .

As a conductor he led numerous orchestras such as u. a. the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence, the Camerata Salzburg , the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna , the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto , the Haydn Orchestra Bozen , the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonic , the Scottish Camber Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in Tokyo. He was also assistant to Daniel Harding , Simon Rattle , Wladimir Jurowski and Claudio Abbado , whom he represented at two concerts by the Orchestra Mozart Bologna . Among other things, he was the musical director of the opera production of Mozart's Magic Flute at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona .

Von Steinaecker as a conductor with artists such as u. a. Dorothea Röschmann , Isabelle Faust , Guy Braunstein , Daniel Müller-Schott , Fazil Say , Sara Mingardo , Andrew Staples , Miah Persson , Hanno Müller-Brachmann , Peter Harvey and Boris Belkin .

With musicians from all over Europe, von Steinaecker founded the Musica Saeculorum orchestra in Bozen . This played u. a. at the International Baroque Days in Melk Abbey, a. a. in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall with the first symphony by Bruckner and played the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation Handel's Messiah a.

In addition, he and his wife, the flautist Chiara Tonelli , founded a chamber music festival at Prösels Palace , in which musicians such as Camilla Tilling , Christian Tetzlaff and Christophe Coin took part.

Since 2019, von Steinaecker has been principal guest conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra .
