Camilla Tilling (born May 18, 1971 in Linköping ) is a Swedish opera and concert singer with a soprano voice .

Life

Youth and education

Tilling grew up in Linköping, where she sang gospel and jazz music in the church choir and in school. She studied in 1997 and 1998 at Högskolan för scen och musik in Gothenburg and at the Royal College of Music in London , where she graduated in 1998.

Career

Her operatic debut in 1997 was the role of Olympia in Jacques Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann in Göteborg. At the New York City Opera she sang Corinna in Gioachino Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims in the 2001/2002 opera season , in 2002 at the Royal Opera House in London under the direction of Simone Young she sang Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss , with Aix- en-Provence Festival die Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart under the direction of Marc Minkowski , at the Glyndebourne Festival in Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten under the direction of Marc Wigglesworth, at the Brussels Opera House La Monnaie / De Munt under the direction of Antonio Pappano played Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, at the Metropolitan Opera under the direction of James Levine played Nanetta in Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff and at the Drottningholm Festival under the direction of Arnold Östman played Pamina in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte . In 2003 she was Dorinda in George Frideric Handel's Orlando with Bejun Mehta in the title role at the Royal Opera House , conducted by Charles Mackerras . She recorded Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with Susan Graham and Ian Bostridge , conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm . Her debut at the Teatro alla Scala in 2005 was the role of Ilia in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Idomeneo . In 2008 she was heard and seen in the role of Angel on a DVD of Olivier Messiaen's opera Saint François d'Assise , recorded live in Amsterdam with Rodney Gilfry as St. Francis, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher .

Camilla Tilling is also at home on the concert stage and in recitals and has performed at the festivals in Salzburg and Vienna , at the BBC Proms , in London's Wigmore Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall, as well as with many of the world's leading conductors and orchestras . Among other things, she sang Joseph Haydn's The Creation with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen , Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner , Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the conductor Daniel Harding , Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Elias with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Great Mass in C minor with the San Francisco Symphony , A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms under the direction of Ivor Bolton and Georg Friedrich Handel's Messiah with the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of William Christie .

In the 2009/2010 season, Camilla Tilling returned to the Royal Opera House in London and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich for productions of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro . She also made guest appearances in Japan , where she most recently appeared with Seiji Ozawa in Hansel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck , this time as Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at Tokyo's new National Theater. In addition, she sang in Paris under the direction of Kurt Masur in Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt and with the conductor Daniele Gatti in Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony , in Stockholm under the direction of Sakari Oramo Ludwig van Beethoven's Scene and Aria Ah! Perfido Op. 65, in Munich with Thomas Hengelbrock Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Elias , in Berlin with Marek Janowski and in Cologne with Semyon Bychkov Johannes Brahms Ein German Requiem, in Salzburg , Birmingham and Berlin with Sir Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion and on tour with Emmanuelle Haïm Georg Friedrich Handel's Messiah. In 2010 she was also the soloist in Gustav Mahler's 2nd symphony at the opening concert of the Rheingau Music Festival , conducted by Paavo Järvi in Eberbach Monastery .

In the season 2013/2014 was Tilling the Royal Opera House as Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatro Real de Madrid as Adina in Gaetano Donizetti's amore L'elisir d' and Salzburg as Euridice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice to Listen. Further engagements took her to the Los Angeles Opera in a recital, to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden with Bach's Johannes Passion and to the Salzburg Festival with Haydn's The Creation .

In the 2014/2015 season Tilling performed Mélisande in Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Saxon State Opera in Dresden and Pamina in Mozart's Magic Flute at the Opéra National de Paris .

In the 2015/2016 season Tilling could be heard as Contessa d'Almaviva in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Drottningholms Slottsteater in Stockholm and as Mélisande in Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Los Angeles Opera.

In the 2016/2017 season Tilling sang the Contessa d'Almaviva in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Kungliga Operan in Stockholm. At the opening concerts of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on January 11 and 12, 2017, Tilling was supposed to step in for the sick Anja Harteros and take over the soprano part at the concerts. Hanna-Elisabeth Müller stepped in for her at short notice .

Awards

  • At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards 2006 , the recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Great Mass in C minor (at DG Archiv) was nominated as the best choral performance.
  • At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards 2009 , the recording of Olivier Messiaen's opera Saint François D'Assise was nominated for Best Opera Recording.

Her first solo album is Rote Rosen , Lieder by Richard Strauss, accompanied by Paul Rivinius, which was released in 2009. She also recorded the album Beyond You Alone, a selection of Schubert songs, also with Paul Rivinius .
