Daniel Harding (born August 31, 1975 in Oxford ) is a British conductor .

life and work

At the age of 17, Harding asked a group of musicians together to Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg perform, and sent a recording of the performance of Sir Simon Rattle in Birmingham. After Rattle heard the recording, he engaged Harding for a year (1993/94) as his assistant with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra . Harding then attended the University of Cambridge , but already after his first year at the university, Claudio Abbado appointed him his assistant to the Berliner Philharmoniker .

From 1997 to 2000 Harding was chief conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra , and from 1999 to 2003 he directed the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen . From 2003 to 2011 he was music director of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra , and in 2011 he was appointed honorary conductor of the orchestra. In 2005 he conducted at La Scala Idomeneo in Milan at the opening of the season as substitute conductor for Riccardo Muti , who had recently resigned as chief conductor of La Scala. At the Aix en Provence Festival 2005 he conducted Così fan tutte . In 2004, Harding was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra from 2006.

He has been chief conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since the 2007/08 season , where his contract was last extended in October 2018 to the 2022/2023 season. Since 2016 he has also been chief conductor of the Orchester de Paris , where he terminated his contract in January 2018 for September 2019. Since 2018 he has been the Artistic Director of the Anima Mundi Festival in Pisa.

Harding made numerous CD recordings, mainly for Virgin Classics and EMI . In 2011 and 2015 he conducted the Venice New Year's Concert .

Harding was married to violist Béatrice Muthelet and has two children. Music colleagues emphasize his perception, which is shown, among other things, in the unusually fast reading and recording of scores .
