City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (also abbreviated to CBSO ) is an orchestra from the central English city of Birmingham with a predominantly classical repertoire. Along with the great London orchestras, it is one of the most important in England.
history
The orchestra was founded as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1920. The first concert took place in September of that year under the direction of Edward Elgar . In 1944 it was converted into a permanent establishment. In the course of time, important conductors created an important ensemble of national importance. Since 1997 the orchestra has been housed in a new building, the so-called CBSO Center , on the corner of Berkley Street and Holliday Street in Birmingham . In addition to the orchestra, there is also a youth orchestra and a choir.
Commercial music recordings were mostly produced in collaboration with the two record labels EMI Classics (see EMI Group ) and Warner Classics (see Warner Music Group ) and were released there.
