Sakari Oramo

Sakari Markus Oramo (born October 26, 1965 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish conductor .

Life

Oramo was originally the violinist and concertmaster of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra . In 1989 he enrolled in Jorma Panula's conducting class at the Sibelius Academy . In 1993, soon after completing his training, he successfully stood in for a conductor of the radio symphony orchestra who was sick and was then appointed deputy chief conductor of the orchestra. Later, from 2003 to 2012, he worked there for around a decade as chief conductor. He also worked in Finland with the Avanti! Ensemble.

Even when he was just starting out as a conductor in Finland, he was appointed Chief Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) as successor to Simon Rattle in 1998 , and in 1999 he was promoted to Music Director. With the CBSO he performed, among other things, the music of John Foulds and published it on sound carriers. After his departure in 2008, he stayed with the CBSO as a guest conductor.

In September 2008 Oramo became chief conductor and artistic director of the Swedish Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra . His contract has now been extended to 2021.

In February 2012, Oramo took over at short notice to step in as conductor for the then 81-year-old Lorin Maazel , who was ill , on the ongoing concert tour of the Vienna Philharmonic through Scandinavia . Oramo's debut at the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic, planned for 2013, took place a year earlier and under special circumstances. Oramo conducted the concerts in Helsinki, Copenhagen and Aalborg (DK), in which the Vienna Philharmonic performed three symphonies by Jean Sibelius (7th, 5th and 1st, in that order) on three consecutive evenings .

In addition to his engagement in Stockholm, Oramo also became chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the summer of 2013 . The contract with the London-based orchestra has now been extended to 2022.

Oramo is married to the Finnish soprano Anu Komsi and the couple have two sons.
