The Sibelius Academy in central Helsinki

The Sibelius Academy ( Finnish Sibelius Akatemia, Sw. Sibelius Academy ) in Helsinki and Kuopio was the only music academy in Finland and, as Scandinavia's largest music academy, was one of the leading institutes in Europe . It was founded in 1882 by Martin Wegelius as Helsingfors musikinstitut ("Helsinki Music School") and named in 1939 after the famous Finnish composer and father of Finnish music Jean Sibelius . Sibelius himself taught there from 1890–92.

In early 2013, the Sibelius Academy merged with the Art Academy in Helsinki and the Theater Academy Helsinki to University of the Arts Helsinki .
