The Åbo Akademi is a Swedish-speaking University in the Finnish Turku . It is not to be confused with the historical Turku Academy , the predecessor of the University of Helsinki . The Finnish-speaking University of Turku is not affiliated with the Åbo Akademi either, although there are collaborations.

history

Åbo Akademi was founded in 1918 as the second Finnish university after the University of Helsinki. Swedish has always been the only language spoken in the Finnish academic world. However, after the Finnish language gained ground in the course of the 19th century in the course of the Finnish language dispute and Swedish was eventually displaced into the position of a minority language, the establishment of a purely Swedish-speaking university represented a backlash among the Swedish-speaking minority . The university was open until 1981 in private hands and was transferred to the state this year.
