The University of Lapland ( Finnish: Lapin yliopisto ) is the northernmost university in Finland and the European Union . It was founded on March 1, 1979 and is based in Rovaniemi . The University network University of the Arctic , whose International Secretariat is also based in Rovaniemi, it belongs to.

In 1979 the educational institution was founded as a university college of Lapland . It has had university status since January 1, 1991, making it the only university in the Lapland region. On August 1, 2006, Mauri Ylä-Kotola , a doctor of medicine, became the new Rector for five years, replacing Esko Riepula, who had been Rector for many years .
