The Coimbra Group (CG) is a network founded in 1985 and currently consists of 39 European universities . The legal status of the group is that of a non-profit making association (asbl) under Belgian law. The group is represented by the general assembly. The group is based in Brussels , the main administrative center of the European Union .

The elite League of European Research Universities (LERU) with 23 members is more influential , and the European University Association (EUA) with around 850 members is broader . There are also other university lobby organizations .

The group is named after the Portuguese city of Coimbra , whose university was founded in 1290.

Self-sight

The group sees itself as an organization of traditional, European, multidisciplinary universities of a high international format.

The statutory purpose of the organization is to create academic and cultural connections for the benefit of all members as well as internationalization and academic cooperation. The pursuit of excellence in teaching and research and serving society in general unites the members.

One goal is a lively exchange of ideas. Another aim of the group is to jointly influence educational policy at national and European level.
