The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki ( Greek Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο της Θεσσαλονίκης ) is the largest university in Greece with around 81,500 students and also one of the largest in Europe . The campus university is located on the site of the former Jewish cemetery in the city center of the Macedonian capital, Thessaloniki . The university is a member of the Balkan Universities Network and the Black Sea Universities Network .

history

The university was the second university in Greece , alongside the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens . Its founding in 1925 was accompanied by extensive reforms, so in 1917 the movement to introduce the Dimotiki in primary schools and in 1929 the abolition of the middle school and the implementation of a six-year curriculum arose . The university was supposed to represent the new image of the Greek educational and social class. It received its modernity on the one hand through the language of the Dimotiki of its professors and on the other hand through the expansion of its educational offer, including many specialized new subjects, such as forest sciences and foreign language didactics . Another example is the founding of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1950 .

During the time of the military dictatorship , the university was occupied “on November 16, 1973 by about 1,000 students” in solidarity with the rebellious Athens students of the Polytechneion .

In 1974/75 there were 27088 students enrolled, which was 29.1% of the total student body in Greece. At that time there were 75 students for one professor.
