John S. Romanides ( Greek Ιωάννης Σάββας Ρωμανίδης , Ioannis Savvas Romanidis ; born March 2, 1927 in Piraeus ; † November 1, 2001 in Athens ) was a Greek Orthodox priest , author and professor who for a long time served the Greek Church in represented the ecumenical council of churches .

Life

Romanides' parents immigrated to the United States when he was two months old. He grew up there in Manhattan . He graduated from the Hellenic College in Brookline ( Massachusetts ) and the Yale Divinity School. He then received his doctorate from the University of Athens . From 1956 to 1965 he was Professor of Dogmatics at Holy Cross Theological School in Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1968 he was appointed Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. His last appointment was as professor of theology at the Faculty of Theology at Balamand University in Lebanon . Romanides died in Athens in 2001.

theology

Romanides' contribution contains much speculation - including controversial - about the cultural and religious differences between Eastern and Western Christianity, and how those differences have influenced the way Christianity evolved in Christian cultures of the East and West, respectively has and is lived.

His theological works underline the empirical basis of theology, called theosis , theoria, or gazing at God (as opposed to the intellectual-contemplative approach) as the essence of Orthodox theology . He saw hesychasm as the core of Christian practice and was a good expert on the works of the late medieval hesychast and theologian Gregorios Palamas .

His research in the field of dogmatic theology led him to the conclusion that there is a close connection between deviations in the teaching content and historical developments. In his later years he dealt particularly with historical topics, especially the Middle Ages, but also the 18th and 19th centuries.
