The University of Balamand (UOB; French Université de Balamand , Arabic جامعة البلمند, DMG Ǧāmiʿat al-Balamand ) is a non-governmental, denominational university in the north of Lebanon in Deir El-Balamand in the El-Koura region on the grounds of the Balamand Monastery (Arabic Dayr-al-Balamand, formerly Belmont). The university is run by the Greek Orthodox Church .
Since the first founding of the monastery by the Cistercians in 1157 and the re-establishment in 1603 by a Greek Orthodox religious order , theological institutes were founded several times (1833, 1921 and 1966), which were usually closed again after a few years. The last established institute was granted university rights in 1988. The university clinic is St. Georges Hospital and is located in Achrafieh (Beirut) .
