Ashrafiyya
Ashrafiyya ( Arabic الأشرفية al-Aschrafiyya ), also Achrafieh , is a district of the Lebanese capital Beirut . It's in the east of the city. The residents are mainly Christians.
overview
Ashrafiyya is considered a wealthy district. It is divided into nine districts (sectors 61 to 69). The best known are the Aschrafiyya district of the same name (sector 63), Hotel-Dieu (sector 64), Mar Mitr (sector 65) and Palais de Justice (sector 66).
The residential and business district on a hill south of the harbor is criss-crossed by relatively narrow and sometimes winding streets. Here are the Sassine-Platz ( Place Sassine ), the Maronite school and University of La Sagesse , the seat of the Archbishop , the Université Saint-Joseph with the associated clinic Hôtel-Dieu de France and numerous restaurants and shops in the upper price range.
In 2009 it was decided to build another high-rise in the district with the Sama Beirut . At 195 meters, it has been the tallest building in Lebanon since its completion in 2017.
On October 19, 2012, a car bomb exploded in busy Sassine Square in front of the al-Farah library. Eight people are believed to have died and at least 78 were injured in the attack. Among the dead was Wissam al-Hassan , the head of the Lebanese police intelligence service.
