George Metallinos (2012)

Georgios Metallinos ( Greek Γεώργιος Μεταλληνός , usually with the suffix patir πατήρ 'father'; born March 11, 1940 in Corfu , Greece ; † December 19, 2019 ) was a Greek theologian , priest , historian , author and university professor .

Life

Metallinos was born in Corfu in 1940, where he also finished high school. He graduated from the University of Athens with a degree in theology (1962) and classical philology (1967). After his military service (1963–1965) he worked there as a research assistant in the department for patristics . He spent the years from 1969 to 1975 in Germany , where he was in Bonn and Cologne a postgraduate course dedicated. During this time he also conducted archival research in England. In 1971 he was ordained a cleric in Germany and obtained the academic degree of Doctor of Theology from the University of Athens and Doctor of Philosophy and History from the University of Cologne .

In 1984 he became a professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Athens. There he taught the subjects of the history of the clergy in the post-Byzantine era, the history and theology of worship and Byzantine history . He served as Dean of the Department of Theology from 2004 to 2007 when he retired .

Metallinos bore the spiritual title of protopresbyteros (πρωτοπρεσβύτερος, ' archpriest ').
