Dog Island is a small inland island on the Gambia River in the West African state of Gambia .

geography

Today uninhabited, about thirteen kilometers from the mouth of the Gambia into the Atlantic Ocean, the oval island is about 310 meters long and 110 meters wide. Dog Island is approximately 150 meters from the north bank of the mainland ( North Bank Region ) at Dog Island Point and is also within walking distance at low tide .

The island was named after the roar of the baboons , which from a distance reminds a bit of barking dogs . Nowadays some boat trips are offered for tourism from Banjul up to the heights of Dog Island, there you can watch numerous dolphins that live in the mouth of the Gambia.

history

In the history of the Gambia , the English major and later Admiral Robert Holmes , who wanted to protect the trading activities of the Company of Royal Adventurers Trading , had a fort built there on Dog Island in the early 1660s . He named the island Charles Island in honor of King Charles II.

When Captain Alexander Grant of the Royal African Corps leased St. Mary's Island in 1816 and had a military base built there, around which the settlement of Bathurst, today's capital Banjul , was built, stones and wood from Dog Island were used for the construction.
