The North Bank Region (formerly: North Bank Division ) is one of six administrative units of the West African state of Gambia . The region corresponds to the Local Government Area Kerewan .

geography

The 2256 km² region, with the seat of the administrative unit in Farafenni (19,512 inhabitants) in the Lower Baddibu district , is divided into six districts . With 178,612 inhabitants (2013 calculation) the region stretches from the Atlantic coast , north of the Gambia River, to the Central River Region in the east.

The six districts are: Lower Niumi , Upper Niumi , Jokadu , Lower Baddibu , Central Baddibu, and Upper Baddibu .

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at the time ), the largest population group is the Mandinka with a share of around four-tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 41.9% Mandinka , 16.4% Fula , 30% Wolof , 0.7% Jola , 0.5% Serahule , 6.3% Serer , 0.1% Aku , 1.1% Manjago , 2.1% Bambara and 0.9% other races.

At the end of 2007, the former North Bank Division became the North Bank Region as part of an administrative reform .

politics

The administrative unit is headed by a governor, and Musa Seku Kanteh has held this position since August 2020 .
