Kanifing Municipal ( German municipality Kanifing ) is a municipality in the West African state of Gambia . It belongs in the administrative division of Gambia , next to the regions and the City of Banjul as a separate administrative district in the top level of administrative units.
According to a calculation from 2013 about 422,877 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 322,410.
geography
The municipality extends over an area of 76 km², it borders in the east on Banjul and in the south on the district Kombo North of the West Coast region . In the north lies the mouth of the river Gambia, in the west the Atlantic.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around three-tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 35.9% Mandinka , 11% Fula , 16.5% Wolof , 19.6% Jola , 4.5% Serahule , 4.4% Serer , 2% Aku , 3.1% Manjago , 0 , 7% Bambara and 2.3% other races.

Municipal council
The local council, the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), is responsible for the area, also known as Kombo-St. Mary Area is known. Until 1990 the local council was known as Kanifing Urban District Council (KUDC). The head of the Kanifing Municipal Council is a Lord Mayor; Talib Ahmed Bensouda has held this position since May 2018 .

Administrative unit
The municipality was in the administrative division of Gambia , since the independence of Gambia, one of the eight Local Government Areas (LGA).
The Kanifing Municipal is combined with the City of Banjul as the Greater Banjul Area (GBA). The GBA has a coding according to ISO 3166-2 ( GM-B
).
The seat of the municipal administration is in Kanifing , a district of Serekunda. Kanifing is sometimes used as a synonym for serrekunda.
