The combo st. Mary Area is an agglomeration (metropolitan area) in the coastal region in western Gambia . The region is the territory of the Kanifing Municipal .

General

This metropolitan area or region corresponds to the Kanifing Municipal with an area of 76 square kilometers.

Colloquially, the city of Serekunda , which is also the center of the agglomeration, is often referred to as the entire Kombo-St. Equated with Mary. This is because the city limits to the other settlements, comparable to the Ruhr area , can no longer be made out in many places . The agglomeration grew rapidly because the settlement area around Banjul was only available to a very limited extent. Since 1993, the number of residents has increased from 228,214 to 404,610 in 2010.

history

The name Kombo-St. Mary comes from Cape St. Mary (also Cape Point), a cape in the north, which was probably named Cabo de Santa Maria by the Portuguese sailors in the 15th century on the holiday of the Annunciation .

The settlements

The administrative headquarters of the Local Government Area are located in Kanifing , and many businesses and industry have settled here. For example, the Banjul Breweries brewery is located here at the beginning of the developed road to Banjul. Serekunda has the largest daily market in the region. There is a large SOS Children's Village near Bakoteh . The most important tourist hotels and facilities in Gambia are located in Kololi Beach , Bakau and Kotu . Abuko is the center for the cattle trade .

Culture and sights

In addition to the many churches and mosques, the many gardens and near Bakau the botanical garden and the sacred crocodile basin of Kachikally are particularly worth seeing. The largest wrestling arena in the country was built in the southwest near Bakoteh.
