Bakau is a town in the West African state of Gambia .

According to a calculation for 2013, there were around 53,766 inhabitants, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 28,882.

location

Bakau, located directly on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean , means 'coast' in the Mandinka language . The place is in the Kombo-St. Mary Area and is part of the Greater Banjul Area administrative unit . It is located about eleven kilometers west of the capital Banjul and about five kilometers north of Serekunda . Located in the immediate vicinity of Cape St. Mary , the place is a tourist center with a few hotels.

The place is a popular residence for civil servants and business people. Foreign embassies have settled in the most privileged places on the cliff.

Local division

Formerly individual settlements, the following places represent parts of Bakau. In the census of 1993 the following places were listed individually: Bakau New Town and Bakau Wasulun Kunda .

Fajara is part of Bakau Newtown. The area around Cape St. Mary is called Old Bakau .

Culture and sights

Cult places

One of the most famous places of worship in Gambia is the Sacred Crocodile Pool of Kachikally . It is one of three sacred crocodile tanks in The Gambia. There are also the sacred trees Soto Sunjama and Ndebani . The tomb of Sait Matty Bah (1863–1897) is also located in Old Bakau .

Buildings

In addition to Cape St. Mary, there is the Bakau Botanical Garden in the village .

There is a Catholic church on the main street.

Sports

The largest athletics and football stadium in the country, where international football matches are also played, is the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
