The Upper River Region (formerly: Upper River Division ) is one of six administrative units of the West African state of Gambia . The region corresponds to the Local Government Area Basse .
geography
The 2070 km² region, with the seat of the administrative unit in Basse Santa Su in the District Fulladu East (11,859 inhabitants), is further divided into four districts . With 202,153 inhabitants (2013 calculation) it is the easternmost region and only borders the Central River Region .

population
According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around three-tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 33.4% Mandinka , 23.9% Fula , 0.3% Wolof , 0.2% Jola , 40.5% Serahule , 0.2% Serer , 0% Aku , 0.1% Manjago , 0.7% Bambara and 0.6% other races.
history
At the end of 2007, as part of an administrative reform, the former Upper River Division became the Upper River Region .

The administrative unit is headed by a governor; Kanimang Sanneh has held this position since September 2013 .
