Kantora is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of four districts in the Upper River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 32,682 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 30,402.
The name is derived from Kantora , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the Serahule made up the largest population group with a share of around six tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 20% Mandinka , 18.9% Fula , 0.2% Wolof , 0.1% Jola , 59.2% Serahule , 0.1% Serer , 0% Aku , 0% Manjago , 1.2 % Bambara and 0.3% other races.
