Sandu is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of four districts in the Upper River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 21,346 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 18,321.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around four-tenths, followed by the Serahule and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 37.3% Mandinka , 27.6% Fula , 0.1% Wolof , 0.1% Jola , 34.2% Serahule , 0% Serer , 0% Aku , 0.1% Manjago , 0 , 2% Bambara and 0.4% other races.
