Sandu is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of four districts in the Upper River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 21,346 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 18,321.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around four-tenths, followed by the Serahule and the Fula.
