Bornholm flag

The Bornholm flag is intended to represent the Danish island of Bornholm as a regional flag . However, there are different versions of which no uniform form has been officially recognized so far. Despite the strict flag law in Denmark , it is not forbidden to fly the regional flag for Bornholm instead of the Danish flag . Most of the versions correspond to the pattern of the Scandinavian cross flag , which is mainly common in the Nordic countries .

The Bornholm flag, along with the Ærø and Vendelbrog , the Vendsyssel flag , is one of the only flags in continental Denmark to mark regional independence in this way.

Bornholm flag ( Turistflaget )

The best-known version, the Bornholmer flag ( Danish : Det bornholmske flag ), which is also known as the “tourist flag ” ( Turistflaget ), has the same structure as the Dannebrog , the flag of Denmark. The white cross on the Danish flag has only been replaced by a green cross. The green color of the cross symbolizes nature on the island. The red base color is reminiscent of belonging to Denmark. The flag, which at the time was in competition with identical proposals for the flag of Greenland , was launched in the seventies by supporters of a Bornholm self-government and the tourism industry. Nowadays it is often used by German sailors instead of the Danish host country flag, the flag of the country in whose territorial waters a ship is located. It is also popular with some of the motorists registered on Bornholm to affix the flag as a sticker next to the Danish nationality symbol.

Bornholm flag ( Bornholmsflaget )

The also popular Bornholm flag ( Bornholmsflaget ) has a white cross with a green cross. It was designed by Mogens Andersen in 1977 and thus follows the model of the flag of Norway . Since it follows the heraldic rule, according to which “heraldic colors” should be separated from one another by a “metal” (white or yellow), the green cross stands out more clearly from the red background. The flag is mainly used in the north of Bornholm.

More flags

Other versions for a flag of Bornholm are suggestions, for example for the flag competition of 1972. One draft provided for a white cross on a red cross on a green background. The “Free Bornholm” ( Bornholm Frit ) flag , a proposal by Sigurd Green, provided for a white base color with a green cross on a red cross. Erling Haagensen's design from 2006 uses the Skåne flag with a golden dragon, the Bornholm heraldic animal, in the Gösch . Other flag designs are based on the Bornholm municipal coat of arms and its colors blue and yellow.

Bornholm Flag Days

The Danish royal house and the Ministry of Justice, which are responsible for the flagging in Denmark, have not set any official flag days for the Bornholm flag. However, the following historical days are considered suitable for hoisting the Bornholm flag:
