The unofficial flag of Vendsyssel , also called Vendelbrog , is intended to represent the historical landscape of Vendsyssel as a regional symbol . It was designed by the artist Mogens Bohøj.

Colors and meaning

The flag shows a green Scandinavian cross on a blue background , which is placed on a yellow-orange cross. The blue background symbolizes the sky and the sea, green the kale that is widespread in the region and the fertile vegetation of the inland areas, yellow-orange refers to the sun, the beach and the dunes.

The colors had already been used before: On the Vendelbo hikes initiated by Carl Honebeck , medals were distributed to the participants, the ribbon of which was green, yellow and blue.

In the original flag design, there was also the Danish flag , the Dannebrog, in the middle to put local patriotism into the appropriate national framework.

Irony and marketing

In 1976 the editors of the satirical Christmas publication Bjæsken , which had specialized in local humor, decided to have an autonomy flag designed for a “free Vendsyssel” to decorate the annual edition. The mayor of Hjørring , Poul Poulsen, took up the idea to promote Vendsyssel and especially its city. On the occasion of a city festival, the local business people were presented with a large flag and a large number of smaller flags were used as street decorations.

The flag has spread as a symbol of the region, especially in the cities of Hjørring and Brønderslev , also partly with the Danish military . It is said that only genuinely indigenous Vendelboers are allowed to flag the Vendelbrog.

Curiosity

In 2009, the North Jutland businessman René Gross Kærskov paid 6,000 Danish kroner to launch the flag of Vendsyssel with a rocket from New Mexico 120 kilometers into space.
