Pleasant crump

Pleasant Riggs Crump (born December 23, 1847 in Crawford's Grove , St. Clair County , Alabama, † December 31, 1951 ) was a Confederate soldier. He was the last survivor with a proven record of participating in the American Civil War as a Confederate soldier . There were other men who claimed to be Confederate veterans of this war , but no verifications were made.

Life

After moving to Petersburg with a friend, Crump joined the 10th Alabama Infantry Regiment in November 1864. He fought in the Siege of Petersburg and witnessed the signing of the Surrender at Appomattox Court House by Robert E. Lee . After the war he lived in Talladega County , Alabama, where he married Mary Hall at the age of 22, with whom he later had five children. The marriage lasted until Hall's death in 1901. In 1905 he married his second wife Ella Wallis, who died in 1942. After that, Crump spent his old age with one of his grandchildren. He was buried in the Hall Cemetery in Lincoln .

The United Confederate Veterans later gave him the honorary title of Colonel as the last veteran.

The last Union Army veteran involved in the combat, James Hard, died on March 12, 1953 in New York.
