James Hard

James Albert Hard (born July 15, 1841 in Victor , Ontario County , New York , † March 12, 1953 in Rochester , Monroe County , New York ) was an American soldier and supercentenarian . He is considered the last survivors of the Civil War on the side of the Union army was fighting.

Hard joined the Union Army in April 1861 at the age of nineteen and fought in the 37th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Battle of Bull Run , the Battle of Chancellorsville , the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Fredericksburg, among others . According to his own admission, he has met President Abraham Lincoln several times, including at a reception in the White House . Hard died on March 12, 1953 at the age of 111 in Rochester, New York.

The last Confederate veteran to fight , Pleasant Crump , died on December 31, 1951 at the age of 104 in Lincoln , Alabama .
