A five wounds cross is a cross with a symbolic representation of the five wounds of Christ .

iconography

The five wounds of Christ are the marks that are arranged in the form of a cross after the depiction of the crucifixion of Christ : on the beam left and right, as well as the nail wounds on the base of the cross, on the longitudinal beam the head wounded by the crown of thorns and the heart of Jesus pierced by the soldier Longinus , the symbolizes the wound on the side.

The five-wound cross is a cross in which the embodiment of the crucified is reduced to iconographic attributes of the wounds: only the hands and feet with the nail wounds, the crown of thorns, the face pierced or pierced through the handkerchief of Veronica , the Sacred Heart of Jesus the gaping wound on the side is depicted with the Holy Blood . On the extended ( Latin ) cross post there is usually the titulus INRI , at the foot of the cross there are also other iconographic attributes, such as Adam's skull.

The veneration of the holy five wounds goes back to the biblical passage "through his wounds we are healed" ( Isa 53,5  EU ), and found an upswing from the 13th century. The memory of holy wounds should protect against unforeseen death. Therefore, the five-wound cross can be found on weather crosses from the Baroque onwards and memorial crosses for accidents, as well as in a military context ( war memorial ).
