List of vehicle nationality symbols
The list of nationality symbols lists the nationality symbols of all countries required for motor vehicles .
General
International distinctive signs are used to assign vehicles to their country of registration and must be attached to the rear of the vehicle when driving abroad outside the EU. They say nothing about the nationality of the vehicle owner. The legal bases are the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic of September 19, 1949 (Article 20 and Appendix 4) and the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of November 8, 1968 (Article 37 and Appendix 3).
In Germany, Section 2 (2) of the Ordinance on International Motor Vehicle Traffic (IntVO) also applied: "Foreign motor vehicles and motor vehicle trailers must [...] carry a nationality symbol that complies with Article 5 and Appendix C of the International Agreement on Motor Vehicle Traffic of October 11, 1909 ( RGBl . 1910 II p. 647) or Article 37 and Appendix 3 of the Convention on Road Traffic of 8 November 1968 (Federal Law Gazette 1977 II p. 809) “. The same situation is currently standardized in Section 21 (2) of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV): "Vehicles registered in another country must also bear the distinguishing sign of the country of registration, Article 5 and Appendix C of the International Agreement of April 24, 1926 on motor vehicle traffic or Article 37 in conjunction with Appendix 3 of the Convention of November 8, 1968 on Road Traffic. ”The International Motor Vehicle Traffic Agreement of April 24, 1926 (RGBl. 1930 II p. 1234) represents the revision of the International Agreement on the Motor vehicle traffic of October 11, 1909, which was drawn up at the Paris Conference from April 20 to 24, 1926.
In the European Union, in the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), in the EFTA state Switzerland as well as in member states of the Vienna Road Traffic Convention, vehicles do not need a nationality mark if a so-called euro number plate with a blue border and integrated nationality mark is attached.
Not every state has its own international distinguishing mark. For example, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China only have the nationality symbol "RC" assigned to the then undivided Chinese Republic in 1932, as is the case for the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) with the symbol " D ”was the case before the“ GDR ”label was created in 1974. However, according to the 2004 agreement to facilitate the cross-border movement of goods and people to which the People's Republic of China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam belong, the People's Republic of China uses the CHN code assigned to it by the ISO-3166-1 coding list .
