License plate (Northern Ireland)
Northern Ireland has retained the 1903 system for its license plates , which applied to all of Ireland until 1987 . The signs have two (until 1966) or three letters (one of which is always an I or Z ), followed by a maximum four-digit number.
The regional origin can be seen from the last two letters. Unlike most of the rest of the United Kingdom , a year or period of first registration of the vehicle cannot be derived from the Northern Irish license plates.
Numbers below 1001 and multiples of 1000 or 1111 are only assigned as a desired number. Front signs have a white background, rear ones a yellow background.
The license plates can have a blue band on the left edge with the twelve gold stars of the EU and the letters GB for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Despite Brexit, there are no plans (as of January 2018) to abolish the use of the EU flag.
Some license plates have the nationality symbol NI for Northern Ireland or IRL for Ireland instead of the "GB" in the national symbol field . In contrast to SCO for Scotland or CYM for Cymru ( Wales ), for example, these abbreviations are not official.
