Two-line variant

Hungarian license plates consist of three letters and three digits, separated by a hyphen (e.g. XXX-111). The writing is black, the background white. On the left edge of the plate, the nationality symbol'H' and the Hungarian national flag were originallyvisible. Since Hungary joined the European Union in 2004, euro plates with a blue bar, the letter 'H' and the European stars on the left edge have been used.

Award

The labels are assigned after the date of approval, starting with AAA-001, so that it is possible to draw conclusions about the approximate date of approval. Single-line signs in European standard dimensions (520 × 110 mm), two-line license plates (280 × 200 mm) and smaller two-line signs (240 × 130 mm) are issued. There are two badges on the rear shield. A variant of the German DIN font is used as the font .

Identification types

In the trucks license plate begins with F , with newer with K . Older followers also show an F in newer trailers the indicator starts with X . The letter U is used for two-wheelers . Trucks and taxis have black lettering on a yellow background.

Special characteristics

For various purposes, special license plates with two letters and two pairs of digits are given. For example, Hungarian police vehicles ( Rendőrség ) have the letters RB or RK on the license plate and Customs and Financial Inspectorate ( Vám ) vehicles have the letters RR . License plates for vintage cars begin with OT , and SP is given for vehicles that take part in motorsport events . In addition, there are several variants of temporary signs that only show one letter (E, P, V or Z).

Diplomats

004 = Germany

Diplomatic license plates have white letters on a blue background and have started with the letters CD since May 2017 . This is followed by two three digits, separated by a hyphen (e.g. CD 123-345). The first number block indicates the country for which the vehicle is used. For Germany , for example, the number sequence 004 is assigned. The country coding was revised in 2017. Previously, the signs showed the letters DT for Diplomáciai Testület , followed by just four digits in two groups of two separated by a hyphen (e.g. DT 12-34). Again, the first pair of digits indicated the country (e.g. 01 for the United States , 04 for Germany, etc.). Consuls used the letters CK and red font on a white background.

Desired license plate

Desired license plate with a freely chosen combination

In Hungary, for a fee, there is the possibility of a custom number plate , in which either a combination in the ABC-123 series format can be selected or the entire label can be freely selected. Many institutions and companies make use of the first option. In addition to attaching metal plates to the vehicle, until 2004 there was also the possibility in Hungary of sticking the license plate to the vehicle in mostly smaller form as an adhesive film.

future

The introduction of a new system is planned for the future, which should allow conclusions to be drawn about the approval location.

history

License plate before 1990
License plate from 1990 to 2004

The current system was introduced on August 1, 1990. Hungary was one of the first countries to display the national flag and nationality symbol directly on the license plate. The previous signs also showed black letters on a white background. However, they were significantly shorter than the European standard size. The license plates consisted of two letters and four digits in groups of two. The type and use of the vehicle could be determined more precisely using the two letters. License plates of diplomats and consuls had the colors blue and red, which are still used today.
