Moldovan license plates were introduced in 1992.

layout

The plates correspond to the European standard : On the left edge of the license plate there has been a blue field with the flag of the Republic of Moldova and the nationality code MD underneath it since 2015 . This is followed by three letters and three numbers, separated by two impressions. The upper embossing contains a hologram , the lower one should be used for badges. Since then, it is no longer possible to draw conclusions about the origin of the vehicle. The new license plates are embossed in the forgery-hindering FE script , desired license plates are still possible and the old license plates remain valid.

From 2011 to 2015, the national coat of arms was in the blue field above the nationality symbol. The actual identification number began with one or two letters that indicated the Rajon or the city, see below. This was followed by two more serial letters and a maximum of three digits.

Example: C AG 307 License plate from Chișinău (capital)
Until 2011, the coat of arms and the letters (1992/93: MLD ) were shown on a white background. A thin, black, vertical line followed as a separation.

Special characteristics

  • Since March 1, 2014, vehicles used for public transport have been given yellow license plates.
  • Temporary license plates show red letters and are provided with a validity date.
  • License plates for diplomats have dark blue letters. They consist of the letters CD or TS followed by three digits and two letters.
  • H indicates a license plate for foreigners.
  • Special combinations are issued for special institutions such as parliament or the army.

In the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic , or Transnistria for short, which has broken away from Moldova , its own signs are issued. See also the article License plate (Transnistria) .
