Introduced 1994

The coat of arms of the Republic of Moldova was introduced into law in 1994.

description

The coat of arms consists of a gold-rimmed shield divided horizontally in red and blue.

Above it lies the golden head of an aurochs , with an eight-pointed golden star between its horns .

On his right the aurochs head is flanked by a golden rose , on his left by a slightly inclined crescent moon .

The shield lies on the breast of a red armored eagle of natural color, which holds a golden high cross in its beak , an olive branch in its right claw and a golden scepter in its left claw .

The coat of arms is also located in the central golden stripe of the Moldovan tricolor , which clearly distinguishes it from the flags of Romania , Andorra and Chad .

symbolism

The eagle is the historical heraldic animal of Romania , but is golden in today's Romanian coat of arms and carries a sword instead of the olive branch.

The head of the aurochs as a symbol of Moldova is united with symbols of Bessarabia.

The three-part tail indicates the three regions of Gagauzia , Central Moldova and Transnistria .

history

The coat of arms is documented as early as the 15th century and was in a similar form the symbol of the old Principality of Moldova , but with a sun instead of a rose. The sun and moon are obviously symbols of ancient Dacian coins . The eight-pointed star is interpreted as an ancient Dacian wisdom symbol. The head of the aurochs was the heraldic animal of the Wallachian dynasty Basarab. With the rose, it also formed the coat of arms of Bessarabia , but with a different color and a five-pointed star.
