The coat of arms of San Marino probably dates from the 14th century and, viewed as a whole, can be seen as a symbol of freedom and independence of the oldest republic on earth. The coat of arms was standardized by law in 2011.

description

The components of the coat of arms are in detail:

  • In a blue shield three green mountains with three silver towers, each adorned with a silver ostrich feather instead of a weather vane . The towers symbolize the three castles of San Marino ( La Guaita , La Cesta and La Montale ), while the hills represent the three peaks of Monte Titano .
  • The motto "LIBERTAS" ( lat. Freedom). It possibly relates to the inclusion of those who were persecuted in the area in " Ur-San-Marino " and to the amazing preservation of San Marino's independence in the midst of much larger states. Also in memory of the alleged last words of the founder Marinus "Relinquo vos liberos ab utroque homine" (Latin: "I leave you as free from every other person") the motto could have originated. It comes from at least the 14th century .
  • An oak and a laurel branch that border the coat of arms, symbols of the stability of the republic and the defense of freedom.
  • A crown that is considered a symbol of “sovereignty actually exercised”. According to the rank crown symbolism common in Germany on the coat of arms of the nobility , it would be “roughly” a princely crown.

The coat of arms of San Marino adorns, among other things, the state flag of San Marino , the first San Marino 1 euro coin and the current 1 cent coin and the logo of the San Marino football association FSGC .
