Marinus (died 366 ), the national saint of San Marino , is considered to be the founder of the oldest existing republic in the world , established in 301 . According to tradition, Marino was a stonemason who through trades from the Dalmatian island of Rab to the other side of the Adriatic Sea arrived where he because of his Christian faith of Diocletian's persecution of Christians has been exposed. He was made a deacon by Gaudentius, Bishop of Riminiconsecrated. When a mentally ill woman accused him of being her husband, who was separated from her, he fled to Monte Titano , lived there as a hermit and built a chapel and a monastery. Marinus was later canonized, and the state of San Marino was created around the monastery. His feast day is September 3rd , the founding day of San Marino and a national holiday.

Marinus is said to have died in the winter of 366 with the last words: Relinquo vos liberos ab utroque homine . - “I leave you as free from this and that person”. Local tradition relates this mysterious sentence to the two people from whose oppression Marinus sought to become a hermit on Monte Titano: the emperor and the pope. He reiterated so in the form of Origin forecast the claim of the later Republic of San Marino on independence and duty exemption from both the Empire and the Papal States .

From 2002 to 2016 Marinus was depicted on the 20 cent coin San Marino . It has been depicted on the country's 2 euro coin since 2017.
