The Sammarinese euro coins are in San Marino put into circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro .
Legal basis and scope of the coining rights
Although San Marino is not a member of the European Union, it has been in a currency union with Italy since the first treaties with the newly founded Kingdom of Italy on March 22, 1862 (see history of San Marino ). To introduce the euro, Italy signed a treaty with San Marino on November 29, 2000 on behalf of the EU. But this was only the formal conclusion: Already on December 16, 1998, the law was passed in San Marino, which regulated the introduction on January 1, 1999. The introduction of cash was the same as in Italy. Minting quotas for San Marinese euro coins will be deducted from Italy.
A new version of the currency agreement was signed on March 27, 2012. It stipulates that the upper limit in value for the annual issuance of euro coins by the Republic of San Marino is calculated by a joint committee as the sum of
- a fixed portion, the initial amount of which is set at EUR 2,600,000 for the first year after the agreement comes into force. The Joint Committee may adjust the fixed percentage annually to take into account both Italian inflation and any significant developments in the euro collector's coin market ;
- a variable part equal to the average number of coins issued per capita in Italy over the past twelve months, multiplied by the population of the Republic of San Marino.
San Marino still has the right to issue gold coins denominated in Scudo , which however do not have the status of legal tender outside the national territory. This limited validity also applies to all special coins denominated in euros that have a different face value than that of the circulation coins.
Circulation coins
First mint series (2002-2016)
The coins were designed by the Hamburg sculptor František Chochola , and they deal with the history and monuments of San Marino. Therefore, the sign of the artist Ch can be found on every coin . The following are shown:

- 2 cents: Statue of Liberty by Stefano Galletti (1883–1905) on the “Piazza della Libertà”, the square in front of the government palace
- 5 cents: fortress tower "La Guaita" (10th / 11th century)
- 10 cents: " Basilica del Santo " (Basilica of St. Marinus), built in 1826 in the classicism style

- 1 euro: San Marino coat of arms
- 2 euros: Palazzo Pubblico , government palace built 1884–1894 (and town hall at the same time)
On each coin there is the writing SAN MARINO and the letter R for the mint Rome. At the bottom right of the coins are the engraver's initials, ELF ( Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini ), and the abbreviation INC (for incidit : engraved by ).
The front of the euro coins, which was redesigned from 2007 (new map of Europe), was only introduced in San Marino in 2008.
