The Portuguese Euro Coins are the in Portugal in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 1999, Portugal joined the euro zone , which made the introduction of the euro valid as the future currency.
Circulation coins
Portuguese euro coins have their own motif for each of the three coin rows. Three royal seals from the years 1134, 1142 and 1144 are shown, surrounded by - the seven battles of Alfonso III. symbolizing against five Moorish kings - seven forts and five coats of arms as well as the word PORTUGAL and the year of issue . All designs come from Vítor Manuel Fernandes dos Santos, who signs VS , and are surrounded by the - embossed - twelve stars of the EU. The edge embossing of all 2 euro coins shows seven forts and five shields, which are also symbolic elements in Portugal's coat of arms .
The coins are minted in the "Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda" in Lisbon . The symbol of the mint - INCM - can be found on the coins above the first coat of arms from the right. The coins that were minted between 1999 and 2002 bear the year of issue 2002. The coins minted from 2003 onwards bear the actual year of issue.
The front of the euro coins, which was redesigned from 2007 (new map of Europe), was only introduced in Portugal in 2008. Around 100,000 of the total of 5 million 1 euro coins from 2008 were still minted with the old map of Europe on the front.
The coins from 2011 onwards have a slightly different appearance on the reverse. The stars are now a bit smaller and the lettering as well as castles and coats of arms have been made more delicate.
