The Maltese euro coins are the coins of the common European currency euro put into circulation by Malta .
Malta joined Exchange Rate Mechanism II on April 29, 2005, so the euro could be introduced on January 1, 2008. On February 27, 2007 it was announced that Malta had officially applied for the introduction of the euro. In 2006 one of the most important criteria, new household indebtedness, was 2.8 percent of gross domestic product. On May 16, 2007, the EU Commission and the European Central Bank announced that Malta would be able to introduce the euro on January 1, 2008. This decision was officially confirmed by the heads of state and government of the EU on June 21, 2007 at the EU summit in Brussels . On January 1, 2008, Malta introduced the euro.
Design of the coins
The first vote on the motifs on the euro coins from Malta took place in January 2006. A total of twelve topics from four different areas were available (Maltese history, Renaissance, identity and archeology). The three best-placed motifs from three different areas should be included in the further selection.
On February 2, 2006, the National Bank announced the result of the vote:
- 1st place: the statue "Baptism of Christ" (Maltese Renaissance ),
- 2nd place: the coat of arms of Malta (Maltese identity),
- 3rd place: Fort St. Angelo (Maltese Renaissance),
- 4th place: the Mnajdra temple complex ( Maltese history ).
Since the first and third place belong to the Renaissance, the third-placed motif, Fort St. Angelo, was ruled out for the Maltese euro coins. Instead, the motif with the Mnajdra temple complex was chosen.
By the end of May 2006, specific drafts were made on the selected topics, as well as a fourth draft with the image of the eight-pointed cross of Malta . In the second selection process that followed, the Maltese cross in front of the coat of arms of Malta and the Mnajdra temple complex emerged as the winner. The coin designer Noel Galea Bason (Signet: NGB ) combined the Mnajdra motif with a frieze decoration from the southern Tarxien Temple , which could represent a spiral tree of life . The baptism of Christ came fourth and is therefore not depicted on the Maltese euro coins.
According to the heraldic rules of tinging , the color red contained in the coat of arms - in addition to white - is represented by hatching on the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins. The concentric hatching around the stars, on the other hand, has no color meaning. In the case of the 1 and 2 euro coins, the coin core is hatched vertically, with the exception of the Maltese cross, which is white on a red background.
The Maltese euro coins are minted in the French mint Monnaie de Paris in Pessac , recognizable by the letter F in the lowest star.

The introduction of cash comprised 41.5 million new euro banknotes to be introduced to the value of 800 million euros and 140 million Maltese euro coins to the value of 40 million euros. The French Mint in Paris received the order to mint the Maltese euro coins, while the country's banknotes were supplied by the Italian central bank.
