The Slovak euro coins are the coins of the common European currency euro put into circulation by Slovakia .
On November 25, 2005 Slovakia joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism II at a central rate of EUR 1 = SKK 38.4550. In mid-March 2007 the central rate was increased to 1 EUR = 35.4424 SKKlowered. Another reduction to 1 EUR = 30.1260 SKK took place on May 29, 2008. The reason for this was the continuous increase in the Slovak crown. On April 5, 2008 it was announced that Slovakia would apply to join the Eurozone on January 1, 2009. The application for membership was then examined by the EU Commission. On May 7, 2008, the EU Commission and the European Central Bank announced that Slovakia could introduce the euro on January 1, 2009. This decision was officially confirmed by the EU finance ministers on July 8, 2008 in Brussels. On January 1, 2009, the euro officially became legal tender in Slovakia at an exchange rate of EUR 1 = SKK 30.1260.
Circulation coins
A public competition was held for the design of the new coins. Details on this competition can be found on the homepage of the Slovak National Bank . In December 2005 it delivered the following result:
- The Kriváň Mountain in the High Tatras , designed by Drahomír Zobek , can be seen on the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins .
- Ján Černaj and Pavel Károly designed the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins . The Bratislava Castle is depicted on them .
- The national coat of arms with the Byzantine double cross on the Dreiberg , designed by Ivan Řehák , can be seen on the 1 and 2 euro coins.
The minting site of the Slovak euro coins is the traditional Mincovňa Kremnica in Kremnica .
