Building of the Kremnica Mint

On December 17, 1328 Cremnychbana was granted the privilege of a minting city by the Hungarian King Karl Robert of Anjou . In the Middle Ages , large amounts of gold and silver were mined in the area around Kremnitz, central Slovakia , which were then turned into coins in the mint. They were minted based on the model of the coins from Florence and, because of their high fineness, were considered the hardest currency in Central Europe .

In 1499, the Kremnica Mint started producing silver coins as one of the first mints. For centuries, the Mincovňa Kremnica was considered a leader in coinage, especially in the development of new production techniques. The Kremnitz mint experienced its heyday under the imperial rule of Maria Theresa , when more coins were minted here than in all other mints of the monarchy combined.

The mint was badly damaged in both world wars, but it was always rebuilt so that coins could continue to be produced for Czechoslovakia . In 1986 minting was relocated to a new plant outside the city center. The old building was still used for the minting of u. a. Medals and orders used. After an extensive restoration, all production from the new plant returned to the old mint.

In 2011 the mint was declared a European Cultural Heritage.
