The Greek euro coins are in Greece in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 2001, Greece joined the euro zone , making the introduction of the euro valid as the future currency.

Circulation coins

Greek euro coins have a different design on each of the eight coins. All were designed by Georgios Stamatopoulos , with the small coins depicting ships, the middle ones depicting well-known Greeks, and the two large coins depicting examples of Greek history and mythology. All coins show the twelve stars of the EU and the year of issue. What is unique is that the currency designation on the Greek coins is given in Greek letters and the term ΛΕΠΤΟ ( LEPTO ) or the plural ΛΕΠΤΑ ( LEPTA ) is used instead of cents . Literally translated, Lepto means thin money .

The eight motifs of the Greek euro coins are:

Greece was included in the monetary union very late. Since Greece was unable to mint the required minimum amount of coins in this short time, some of the coins were minted by other countries (“foreign minting”). These coins have a country code letter embossed in one of the twelve stars: the 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 cent coins the letter F (France) for France, the 20 cent coin E (España) for Spain, the 1 and 2 euro coins are stamped S (Suomi) for Finland. The following coins will be minted in the Greek mint in Athens.

Like most euro countries, Greece has been minting its euro coins with the newly designed front (new map of Europe) since 2007.

Consistent with the design guidelines

Due to the lack of a reference to the issuing country, the Greek euro coins do not fully comply with the design guidelines of the European Commission from 2008. These contain recommendations for the design of the national sides of the currency coins. The countries whose coins do not yet meet the recommendations can make the necessary adjustments at any time; they must do this by June 20, 2062 at the latest.

10 Euro

The 10 euro commemorative coins of Greece were issued in different formats. From 2003 to 2012, for example, there were smaller coins with a notched edge, which were largely intended for issue in coin sets. At the same time, there were larger pieces with smooth edges that have been published since 2003.
