Dionysios Solomos ( Greek Διονύσιος Σολωμός ; * April 8, 1798 in Zakynthos ; † February 9, 1857 in Corfu ) was a Greek nobleman and poet .

Life

Solomos, born in Zakynthos in 1798, leaned his poetry on the demotic ( vernacular ) tradition and gave popular tradition a new poetic dimension. Attaching a romantic popular term, he tried to gain artistic inspiration and authenticity. There is evidence that he collected popular idioms and terms and examined the Greek vernacular ( Dimotiki ). In his Dialogue on Language (Διάλογος, 1824) he let the poet praise the virtues of the authentic vernacular; As a fictional interlocutor, he contrasted him with the figure of the pedant, who was drawn in grotesquely comic features and who absolutely advocated a pure language based on the ancient model.

This interest in the linguistic can also be seen against the background that Solomos spent many years studying in Italy , where he was in contact with representatives of Romanticism; among other things he got to know Ugo Foscolo personally; he made his first poetic attempts in Italian. After his return to Greece, where he later lived in Corfu , he began to write poetry in his mother tongue; his expressive poetry embodies a first high point of literary creation in a supraregional form of the vernacular.

Solomos' poetry is also strongly influenced by the national struggle for freedom of the Greeks. Language also gained importance for the poet as a factor in establishing identity. His poem Imnos is tin Eleftherian ( Hymn to Freedom ), written in 1823, was very well received and suddenly made known. In the setting by Nikolaos Mantzaros it became the national anthem when the modern Greek state was founded (the Greek original text was checked by the Bavarian royal court on the basis of a translation made by Joseph Mindler ). Other larger poems followed, some of which remained unfinished, such as the Ελεύθεροι Πολιορκημένοι ( The Free Besieged ), and Εις το θάνατο του Λορδ Μπάιρον ( On the death of Lord Byron , 1824) and two Prosecutions.

honors and awards

During his lifetime, however, the poet's fame was limited. Solomos was depicted on the 20 drachma coin (approx. 6 euro cents) used from the 1990s to the end of 2001 .
