Louis Coutelle (* 1921 in Marseille ; † May 28, 2012 ) was a French neo-Greekist .

Life

After attending school in Marseille, Coutelle studied English at the University of Aix-en-Provence . He then taught English at a Lycée in Marseille for 18 years. A trip to Greece in 1959 turned his interest to modern Greek literature . Until then, he had only got to know ancient Greek, which was taught in the Lycée . The first investigations into Dionysios Solomos were favorably received by the great neo-Greekist André Mirambel . He then arranged a delegation from Coutelle to the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) for a few years . His Solomos book of 1977 emerged from his work in Greek and Italian libraries. From 1971 onwards he taught Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Aix-en-Provence. There he supervised a thèse de doctorat by Hélène Cotta with the title Traductions en vers de l '"Iliade" et de l' "Odyssée" dans la Grèce du XIXe siècle (1980).
