Neo-Greek Studies

Modern Greek Studies ( Greek : Nεότερη Eλληνική Φιλολογία) denotes an academic discipline of Humanities , the linguistic , literary , cultural studies and regional studies and ethnographic research and teaching of the Greek world ( Greece , Cyprus and the Greek diaspora ) of modern times and modern has as its object .

task

Its primary task is to research, document and convey the modern Greek language and modern Greek literature in their historical and contemporary manifestations. Value is also placed on historical and cultural-scientific issues. In most courses of study in Neo-Greek Studies, events are also integrated that deal with medieval Greek literature and history ( Byzantine Studies ).

Study opportunities

The main subject is Neo-Greek Studies in Germany and Austria at the following universities: Free University of Berlin , University of Hamburg , LMU Munich , University of Vienna . The University of Mainz offers a minor in Modern Greek at Faculty 6 Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim .

history

At the beginning of the 21st century, the chair for neo-Greek studies at the universities of Bochum , Bonn and Würzburg was canceled, but independent professorships for neo-Greek studies were set up alongside Byzantine chairs in Berlin, Munich and Vienna .

The first European Congress for Neo-Greek Studies was held in Berlin in 1998.
