Live and act

For Lavagnini, who in addition to his chair for “Greek Literature” represented Modern Greek Literature for three decades with an additional teaching position, Byzantine and Modern Greek literature was the natural development of ancient Greek literature, which could not be viewed in isolation. It was therefore particularly important to him to make modern Greek literature compulsory alongside classical Greek literature in the university's curriculum, but also to make it accessible to a wider public through translations.

Lavagnini was dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Palermo from 1965 to 1973 , director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Athens ( Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Atene ), whose reconstruction he directed after the Second World War (1952 to 1959), founder of the independent from the University of Palermo Istituto Siciliano di Studi Bizantini e Neoellenici (German: "Institute for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies"), which today bears his name, and Greek honorary consul in Palermo. He gave up this task after the putsch of the colonels in 1967. From 1963 to 1972 he was chairman of the Italian Byzantine Union.

For many years he was president of the Accademia di scienze, lettere e arti in Palermo, of which he had been a full member since 1936, and a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1963 and a full member from 1972 . In 1964 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Athens , and in 1974 he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. He was also an honorary doctor of the University of Athens since 1937 . For Arodafnusa. 32 Poeti Neogreci (1880–1940) , a bilingual edition of poems by modern Greek poets, he received the Premio Marzotto in 1957 .

From 1975 to 1981 he was President of the Fondazione Giuseppe Whitaker , which has its headquarters in the Villa Malfitano in Palermo. The Greek library of the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Palermo (AGLAIA. Dipartimento di studi greci, latini e musicali) was named after him. With the formation of the Dipartimento Scienze Umanistiche , the old names officially fell away. The local group of the AICC (Associazione Italiana di Cultura Classica) also has the addition of Bruno Lavagnini.

His daughter is the Byzantine and Neo-Graecist Renata Lavagnini .
