The University of Palermo ( Italian : Università degli Studi di Palermo ) is a university based in the Sicilian capital Palermo . With around 50,000 students and 2,000 academic employees, it is one of the largest universities in Italy . Fabrizio Micari is the rector of the university.
The research facilities of the University of Palermo go back to a medical and law school from 1498, from the end of the 16th century until the expulsion from the Kingdom of Sicily in 1767, the Jesuits dominated the higher education in Palermo. In 1779 the Reale accademia degli studi (Royal Academy of Studies) was established, which in 1806 was expanded to become the Università reale degli studi (Royal University of Studies).
The university's branches ( Polo didattico ) can be found in Agrigento , Caltanissetta and Trapani .
