The University of Campania "Luigi Vanviteli" ( Italian Università degli Studi della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" ) is a state university in the southern Italian region of Campania , which has existed since 1992 . Its headquarters are in Caserta , with branch offices in eight other cities in the region, including Naples . It is named after the architect Luigi Vanvitelli , whose most important work is the Palace of Caserta . Until 2016, the university was known as the "Second University of Naples" ( Italian Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli , SUN). When it was founded, it was the second University of Naples after the much older University of Naples Federico II ; the two universities, Istituto Universitario Orientale and Istituto Universitario Navale , only received full university status in 2002 and 2006 . This makes the University of Campania the second of four universities in the Naples area.

history

The university is a spin-off from the Federico II , founded in 1224 , which had capacity problems in the 1980s due to increasing student numbers. The second university was founded with a law of August 7, 1990 (245/90), and university operations began in 1992, initially with a focus on the medical field. In the further course of the university operations were gradually shifted from the city of Naples to the surrounding area. For this purpose, either new buildings were built or older ones were converted or prepared for the needs of the university. A new university hospital is currently being built in Caserta . The relocation of various organizational units to the region led to the renaming of the university in 2016.

organization

Since 2010 the university is no longer divided into faculties, but into schools and departments . In addition to a polytechnic school and a medical school, there are currently (2019) a total of 16 departments :
